Our Projects

Assist 4 Life Program

The Assist 4 Life program identifies children at the crossroads and makes moves to steer them in the right direction through after-school activities, educational projects and mentoring programs. Assist 4 Life is designed to give young students the basic tools and provide incentives to perform well academically, athletically and socially by helping them find ways to succeed through hard work and maintaining a positive attitude. This program will pilot in the Dr. E. Alma Flagg School on North 3rd Street in Newark, the elementary school that Randy attended. Randy will donate money to the program based on the number of assists he has each year.

Community FoodBank of NJ BackPack Program

The RFF recently joined with the FoodBank to bring its BackPack Program back to Flagg. The program provides backpacks full of supplemental nutritious, kid-friendly food to children who are “food insecure” over the weekend. When a child is “food insecure,” he or she is at great risk of going hungry. To combat this problem, food packages are delivered weekly to participating schools where staff members distribute them in backpacks, which are also donated by our program. The children may keep these backpacks for personal use. Overall, the FoodBank provides 10,800 packages of weekend food to children in need.

Department of Homeland Security Internship

The Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (DHS/ICE) in conjunction with the RFF is offering two volunteer internship positions to high school students from the City of Newark for 2009-2010 school year. Students must be currently enrolled in an accredited Newark high school on a full-time basis. The positions are within the Litigation Unit of ICE, which is located in the Peter Rodino Federal Building, 970 Broad St, Room 1104B, Newark, NJ. Duties will include filing, data entry, data processing, and photocopying. The position will also require the performance of internet based research on various topics. As part of the program student interns will have the opportunity to observe Immigration Court proceedings and visit ICE component offices including Deportation, Investigations, Customs and Border Patrol.

Holiday Basketball Tournament, Toy Drive

This past December, the RFF partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Newark to host a holiday basketball tournament at their Central Ward location. The one-day tournament featured eight boys and girls teams from the greater Newark area. The foundation also hosted a toy drive for the holiday season and thanks to the generous support of our friends, we were able to provide over 350 toys to students at Flagg. Coupled with the efforts of Toys for Tots, each of the 550 students at Flagg received a present. Volunteers gathered on a Sunday afternoon to wrap all of the donated items, which were delivered to the school the next day.

Randy Foye Gym

The RFF is raising funds to rebuild and renovate the gymnasium at Dr. E. Alma Flagg School. The gymnasium is in need of an upgrade with regard to painting, wall safety padding, re-flooring, new bleachers and new basketball rims/nets. Once completed, the gym will be renamed and dedicated in honor of one of Flagg’s most famous alums, Randy Foye. The RFF also plans to renovate the outdoor playground area at Flagg by re-paving the blacktop, installing new basketball rims/nets, metal bleachers, and playground equipment for the primary grades.

Randy Foye NBA Elite Skills Basketball Camp

Randy Foye Basketball Camp was held at Rumson Country Day School from August 4-8, hosting over 100 campers (half of which were on scholarship from the RFF). The 6-hour daily camp included skill instruction, lectures from Randy, competitions, 5 on 5 games, and a host of awards and autographs handed out at the closing assembly. Guest speakers included Jay Wright, Villanova; Freddie Hill, Rutgers; Jack Howley, Howley Financial Group; and Sandy Pyonin, NJ Roadrunners AAU Basketball. The camp brought together kids from the local area and Newark. It stressed the values of teamwork and a positive attitude in order to achieve success. The campers came together as a cohesive family by the end of the week, and all of the kids enjoyed plenty of opportunities to get to know Randy and learn the game of basketball from him.

Team Foyeboy

The Team Foyeboy project gives assistance to underprivileged youth basketball programs by coordinating with Nike, the NBA and other corporate sponsors to supply necessary equipment to these teams. Team Foyeboy would eventually like to build a recreational facility to provide a place where young kids can learn and develop skills in a safe environment.
